Family Psychotherapy
Family therapy can be an excellent alternative for families who are going through moments of conflict and disharmony.
In this context, the family can be seen both in its nuclear structure — father, mother and children — and in its extended structure, including grandparents, cousins, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, etc.
Family therapy is a therapy carried out in groups to build and develop dialogue between family members and thus assist in solving problems and achieving respectful, harmonious and healthy relationships.
Conflicts may not have an exact reason, such as a fight, a legal dispute, a long-standing feud. They may simply arise from the difference in personalities and opinions. In this case, it is more difficult to calm the parties involved because they are not always able to see their problematic behaviours.
This type of therapy emerged, then, to identify points of friction in the relationship between family members and find agile and possible solutions to make everyone's life healthier as a family.
How does family therapy work?
Sessions take place in groups and family members are encouraged to talk about their problems. Dialogue is the main tool of therapeutic care. While one speaks, the other listens patiently. Everyone will have moments of listening and speaking where the exercise of empathy is encouraged so that one understands the other's point of view and is able to change their behaviour.
The family will choose the way they feel most comfortable interacting in the sessions. At the first meeting, the therapist will simply explain how the therapy works and question each family member's motivation for being present.
Then the work begins. Slowly, the family begins to open and share frustrations, impasses and desires.
For many, it's scary to talk about problems openly, especially with people who are involved in them or may even be the cause of emotional distress. Fear and anxiety can be obstacles to sincere dialogue.
This concern is a common feature of family therapy, the main goal of which is to help people feel more comfortable with themselves and their family members. By understanding their role in the family structure, each person becomes capable of taking responsibility for their place in the family and understanding family dysfunctions and anxieties.
📍 The number of sessions and their frequency is agreed between the family and the psychologist in the initial screening consultation. The duration of each session is 50 minutes.
